Die Beatmungsform kann an verschiedenen Merkmalen differenziert werden. Dazu gehört die Unterscheidung über den Zugang, welcher invasiv beispielsweise über einen Endotrachealtubus oder Tracheotomietubus erfolgen kann, oder nicht-invasiv beispielsweise über eine Atemmaske. Weiterhin kann nach dem Anteil der Atemarbeit unterschieden werden, die der Patient leisten muss bzw. nach dem Anteil, der vom Beatmungsgerät übernommen wird. So kann der Patient spontan atmen, Unterstützung vom Beatmungsgerät erhalten oder der Respirator übernimmt die Atemarbeit vollständig.
