The Secondary Code (Unbound) template is a generic template that is referenced by various section or entry to enable the consistent communication of a secondary code is required. The specification recognizes that there are many coding options for procedures depending on the scope of practice and jurisdictional requirements of the practitioners. Consequently, it is recommended that if the source system has more than one code for a procedure from alternate coding systems it should include all available codes in the expectation that the receiving system will recognize and support one of the code systems. The specification supports attaching a secondary code to a procedure record for this purpose.
